The Montreal Canadiens this morning announced they have re-signed G Cayden Primeau to a one-way, three-year contract worth $2.67 million ($890k AAV):

Primeau was selected by the Habs in the final round of the 2017 NHL draft. The 23-year old has appeared in 18 games for the Habs, including 12 last season, in which he did not yield what I would call 'acceptable' numbers. Still, he is young for a goalie, as they tend to enter their prime around 26. In a larger AHL sample size, he has performed well enough for the Habs' organization to suspect they may have a viable NHL goaltender in Primeau, however. For the Laval Rocket last season, Primeau started 33 games and posted a 2.94 GAA and .909 SV% en route to the team's deep playoff run.

The Canadiens' goaltending depth chart looks like Jake Allen, Sam Montembault, Primeau, and the injured -- possibly retiring -- Carey Price. Assuming insider Kevin Weekes and his reporting are correct, the Habs now have all three active goaltenders signed beyond next season. While none of them scream 'Cup-contending starter,' the trio makes up a deep enough goaltending group, while many teams are struggling to assemble a viable tandem. Montreal's trio might not be the best in the NHL, but they are far from the worst in the same light.
