The expectation within the club is to sellout every game. Hardly a benchmark achievement with so few seats to sell. Still, this is welcome news for an organization, and as long as the Coyotes are in the NHL, everyone should hope for the best. Unless you live in Houston or Quebec City, then feel free to cheer for the club's demise all you like.
Coyotes president and CEO Xavier A. Gutierrez told ESPN on Wednesday:
"We're still very confident that we have the right deal, the right project and the right ownership group to get it done. It's the first privately financed sports and entertainment district in the history of Arizona. This is the bridge to that."
With only 5,000 the news has a certain unimpressive quality to it, but the environment should get pretty rowdy regardless of the extra 10,000 not being present. First off, a filled building makes for a better fan experience than an empty one, no matter the size, so right there the in-game atmosphere will be exciting. Second, the arena is on-campus to the biggest party school in the United States, which will definitely spill over to Yotes' games.
The Coyotes' hockey team is the biggest area of concern, but GM Bill Armstrong knows where his team is at and has them on a specific timeline. One that looks sort of similar to their plans for a home rink; a few years out, at best. Ipso facto, whether or not they sell out every game this season, they will still be contending for the odds of picking first in the upcoming draft over a playoff berth. Games should certainly be fun, though.
