The Carolina Hurricanes have improved their roster down the middle of the ice, as they announced on Tuesday morning that they have signed Paul Stastny to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.

Stastny, 36, was reported to have had interest from several teams since free agency begun over a month ago, but was in no rush to sign. He made it clear he wanted to find the best fit for himself on a contending team, and judging by his cap hit he left money on the table to do so. While no longer the big point producer he was early in his career, his defensive play remains outstanding and he can still provide plenty of secondary scoring, proven by the fact he notched 21 goals and 45 points in 71 outings with the Winnipeg Jets last season.

Many believed the Hurricanes were a frontrunner for Stastny, as they needed to improve down the middle ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. This move, while by no means a blockbuster, will certainly help them in that regard. It could mean the end of the road for Derek Stepan, however, who recently signed a professional tryout offer with the Canes in hopes to earn of his own down the middle of the lineup this season.
