Free agency is set to open on Wednesday at noon ET, but the trade market has begun to heat up over the last five or six days.

Carolina has been one of the teams to be involved in the trade action, sending pending restricted free agent defenceman Tony DeAngelo to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a trio of draft picks.

With DeAngelo traded, the Hurricanes have a hole on the right side and according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Carolina has inquired with the San Jose Sharks regarding Brent Burns and the Montreal Canadiens about Jeff Petry.

LeBrun also mentioned that, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Dallas Stars have checked in on Brent Burns. As has been the case for a while, the Stars remain interested in Jeff Petry.

"The Hurricanes have made replacing Tony DeAngelo on the right side a top priority. Two players I believe they've kicked tires on: Brent Burns and Jeff Petry. There are other trade options as well, but something to file away." LeBrun said.

He added, "I believe @FriedgeHNIC has mentioned Dallas as a possible destination for Burns as well. Which would make sense with Klingberg going to market. Of course so would Petry in the same fashion."

Burns, a native of Barrie (Ontario), has three years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $8 million per season. His contract also includes a modified no-trade clause, with a three-team no-trade list.

As for Jeff Petry, Montreal Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes says that while he is open to moving the 34-year-old, he'll only do so if it "advances the interests" of the team. Petry has three-years remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6.25 million per season. The Ann Arbor (Michigan) native has a modified no-trade clause, which includes a fifteen-team no-trade list, as well as a full no-movement clause.
