During Monday's '32 Thoughts' podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Colorado Avalanche were one of the teams to inquire about the availability of Patrick Kane leading up to March 21st's trade deadline.

Friedman went on to say that if he becomes available this summer, given the moves Chicago has made recently and the upcoming meeting Kane and Jonathan Toews have with management, it's possible the Avalanche try to acquire the 33-year-old.

"Now the other thing I want to say about Colorado is -- at some point in time we're going to get some clarity on Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. And I think they wanted to breathe after the trades and the moves at the draft, but I do think they're going to talk to Chicago about their futures," Friedman said.

He added, "Last year, Colorado was one of the team's inquired about Patrick Kane before the trade deadline to see if he was available. And I stress this is an IF --- if Patrick Kane's available, I could see Colorado making another try for him."

Kane, a native of Buffalo (New York), has spent his entire fifteen year career in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks after being the first overall pick in 2007. He's won the Stanley Cup three times with Chicago, along with a handful of individual awards, including the Hart Trophy in 2015-16.

Seeing Patrick Kane in any other uniform than Chicago's would be weird, but as the Blackhawks enter a full-on rebuild, it makes sense to move him, along with Jonathan Toews to gain assets to help down the road. A Patrick Kane trade would be big, and likely include a first round pick, top prospect, along with another asset or two.

The main thing Chicago will have to decide if they want to trade Kane, is retaining salary, which they're more than capable of doing. Or, they could even involve a third team to take on a portion of Kane's salary. Kane has one-year remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of $10.5 million, but his base salary after having his $4 million bonus paid out is only $2.9 million. He also has a full no-movement clause.
