After much ado over Forsberg's contract negotiations with the Predators, the Swedish Sniper reportedly agreed to a monster eight-year, $70 million ($8.5M AAV) contract extension, per Dawn Davenport:

Rumors suggested that Forsberg's camp insisted on a $9M AAV, and that if Nashville wanted to keep him they would have to raise their offer from $8M to at least $8.5M. Something they ultimately did begrudgingly, but over 8 years that half a million per season means an extra $4 million for Forsberg. Fairly reasonable for a 40-goal scorer.

On top of scoring lots of goals, Forsberg is an elite play driver who thrives on the powerplay & 5v5 against some of the stiffest competition possible. His two-way capabilities might slip under the radar at times, which is why GM David Poile ultimately decided to hand Forsberg the bag. His 469 points are the most scored by any player from the 2012 draft class, and his 566 NHL games played are tied for ninth-most.

The signing leaves the Predators with $9.6 million in cap space this summer with seven free agents, including Yakov Trenin & newly acquired John Leonard. One has to think Poile is looking to get C Ryan Johansen & his $8 million cap hit off of their books in the name of flexibility. And after being swept by the eventual Stanley Cup winning Colorado Avalanche, the Predators will need to add quality players if they want to contend. Should be an interesting summer for Smashville, but this is a great signing for them. Forsberg, 27, will be 35 when the deal is up, so they shouldn't have to worry about him aging out until the last year or two.
