The Edmonton Oilers are a team in search of cap space, and they may have some coming their way in the near future.

According to TSN's Ryan Rishaug, Duncan Keith is seriously pondering retirement, though a decision has yet to be made. From the sounds of several reports, Oilers general manager Ken Holland has asked for the veteran defenceman to let him know one way or the other by July 10.

Keith, 38, was acquired in a rather controversial move by Holland last offseason which saw Caleb Jones and a third-round draft pick head the other way. While picking up a former Norris Trophy winner is never a bad decision, several were baffled at the fact the Chicago Blackhawks didn't have to retain any of Keith's $5.53 million deal. In fairness to the three-time Stanley Cup winner, his 2021-22 season wasn't all that bad, though getting his cap hit off the books in order to address other needs would be huge for the organization.

There had been speculation about Keith's possible retirement shortly after the Oilers were eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche, though it seemed that it wasn't all that likely due to the fact he wouldn't receive the $5.53 million he is owed for the upcoming season. That said, he has made plenty already in his career, which would certainly make the decision to walk away that much easier. Expect to hear plenty more on this in the coming days.
