During the annual state of the league address prior to the start of the Stanley Cup Final, National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told reporters that they are still aiming to hold the next edition of the World Cup of Hockey in February 2024. Daly added that discussions are still ongoing with the NHL Players Association and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

"It's a work in progress," Daly said. "Obviously, we've been engaged with the [NHL] Players' Association for several months now and we're very much aligned in what we are trying to accomplish. We've engaged now the IIHF in those discussions. It's become a little more complicated because of the League's and the clubs' interests, particularly in a February tournament as opposed to a fall tournament. So those are issues we're trying to work through."

He added, "But we're very optimistic that we'll be able to stage a tournament in 2024, regardless, so we're looking forward to that."

The last time the World Cup of Hockey was held was September of 2016 in Toronto (Ontario), when Canada took home their second-straight title after winning it back in 2004. The 2024 edition of the World Cup of Hockey will be very similar to the 2004 tournament, as the NHL is doing away with Team North America and Team Europe, which is a good thing as it gives other countries the opportunity to participate at a world-class event.
