Defenceman Kris Letang is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 13th, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are still hoping to sign him before he hits the open market.

Not only are the Penguins trying to sign Letang and keep him in Pittsburgh, they reportedly want to lock him up to a multi-year deal. It's been reported that Letang is seeking a higher AAV than the $7.25 million he made on his previous deal, so will the Penguins be able to accommodate that?

But it will be tough for the Penguins as they also are trying to keep veteran forward Evgeni Malkin, who has been a massive part of their franchise for the past sixteen years.

The Montreal native has spent his entire career with the Penguins after they selected him in the third round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He's been the pilar of the blueline in Pittsburgh for a long time now, helping them win the Stanley Cup three times, in 2009, 2016 and 2017. In 941 career games, he's tallied 650 points (144 goals, 506 assists).
