Following a lengthy city council meeting on Thursday, the City of Tempe has voted 5-2 in favour of proceeding with further negotiations on the Arizona Coyotes' plan for a new arena.

After the meeting concluded and the vote went their way, the Arizona Coyotes took to social media to release a statement.

"We are extremely pleased that the Tempe City Council has voted to proceed with negotiations on development of the Tempe Entertainment District. Having heard all the facts, they have recognized the incredible opportunity that this project presents - not only for the Coyotes but also for the City of Tempe. We look forward to taking the next steps to turn this exciting vision into a reality."

One of the speakers at the meeting was National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman who said if the arena deal goes forward, the Coyotes would have to sign a 30-year non-relocation agreement, but would also be in line for an All-Star Game and the Entry Draft down the road.

The Coyotes will vacate Gila River Arena on June 30th and will play out of Arizona State University's arena for the next three-years, with an option for a fourth year as well.
