2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship Quarter-Final Recap

Quarter-final Thursday at the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship is in the books and what a day it was, featuring four incredible games.

Czechia and Germany opened the day in Helsinki and it was the top line of David Pastrnak, David Krejci and Roman Cervenka that led the way once again, as the Czechs won by a score of 4-1.

Czechia's goals: David Pastrnak, David Krejci, Roman Cervenka, Jiri Smejkal.
Germany's goal: Moritz Seider.

Over in Tampere, it may have been the game of the tournament thus far between Sweden and Canada. Sweden had a 3-0 lead going into the third period, but Canada stormed back, scoring twice in thirty seconds with less than two minutes remaining to tie the game at 3-3. On the powerplay early in overtime, Senators forward Drake Batherson scored the winner to send Canada to the semis.

Canada's goals: Ryan Graves, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Mat Barzal, Drake Batherson.
Sweden's goals: Carl Klingberg, William Nylander, Max Friberg.

In the second game of the day in Helsinki, the undefeated Swiss took on the United States. The US took a 2-0 lead in the first period and added another goal in the third to hold on for a 3-0 win. Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves for his second shutout of the tournament.

United States' goals: Ben Meyers (x2), Adam Gaudette.

Meanwhile in Tampere, the hosts Finland took on Juraj Slafkovsky and Slovakia. Coming into the game, Finnish netminder Jussi Olkinuora had recorded three consecutive shutouts, but his streak ended on Thursday. Eight minutes into the first, 17-year-old Adam Sykora tipped in a Mario Lutner shot to give the Slovaks a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Pavol Regenda scored to put Slovakia up 2-0.

The Finns would come back with four answered goals, led by veteran forward Marko Anttila, who potted two, as they defeated Slovakia, 4-2.

Slovakia's goals: Adam Sykora, Pavol Regenda.
