The Montreal Canadiens entered Tuesday night's draft lottery with the best odds at walking away with the first overall pick in this summer's draft, which they will host.

Ultimately, it happened and the Canadiens will select first overall for the first time since 1980 when they took the late Doug Wickenheiser, who spent parts of four seasons with them.

On Wednesday evening, projected number one pick Shane Wright spoke with TSN's Gino Reda about what it would mean to him if the Canadiens drafted him with the first overall selection.

"Montreal would be an unbelievable place to go if I'm lucky enough to be selected. I'm definitely super happy with how the results turned out," Wright said.

He added, "It would be extra special, a dream come true just being drafted, and then to [possibly] be taken first overall by a franchise in such an unbelievable city, with that sort of fanbase, and the history of that organization. It would be pretty incredible and a lifelong dream come true, for sure."

The 18-year-old is currently in the Ontario Hockey League where he captains the Kingston Frontenacs. Kingston is in the second round of the playoffs against Canadiens prospect Joe Vrbetic and the North Bay Battalion. North Bay holds a 2-1 series lead with Game 4 set for tonight in Kingston.

Wright believes that he should be the first overall pick this summer and that he deserves the honour.

"[Being No. 1 overall] is definitely really important to me. I think based on my work and my career, I deserve to be the first overall pick," said Wright. "I deserve to have that honour. I believe that I am the best player in this draft and that I should be taken first overall."

The 2022 NHL Entry Draft is set for July 7th and 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
