Thompson can really rip it, probably one of the best shots in the NHL pound for pound. Helps when you're 6'6"...

For the longest time it was a foregone conclusion that the St. Louis Blues won the Ryan O'Reilly trade. However, nowadays it is looking more & more like the Tage Thompson trade. But is he legit?

Thompson currently has 37 goals in 75 games, which is much greater than his career high. His shot is insane, he can be deployed in all situations, and oh yeah he's 6'6", which is really, really hard to teach. He seems very legit to me...

With Thompson & Cozens centering Buffalo's top-6, they might be onto something.

St. Louis won a Stanley Cup with Ryan O'Reilly, so that by default wins the trade. However, it doesn't appear that Buffalo *lost* the trade, either.

Vladamir Sobotka & Patrik Berglund obviously didn't work out. But the 2019 1st Rounder they received turned into Ryan Johnson, a defenseman who finished his season with the Minnesota Gophers with 3g/16a/19p in 39GP. Still to be seen if he becomes a full-time NHLer. The 2021 2nd Rounder they received turned into Swedish F Isak Rosen. He's been underwhelming in his D+1 season; however, if he can turn into a productive piece, that would be a really solid return for Buffalo.

Combine that with the Jack Eichel-trade return, and it's easier to be optimistic about the Sabres' future than it has in years' past.
