The winners of this year's trade deadline were generally agreed upon; Minnesota, Colorado, the New York Rangers, etc. But sneakily one of the best pickups might have been former Montreal Canadien Brett Kulak, who was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers.

He's already proving to be enormously helpful on Edmonton's inadequate blue line. Edmonton has been rolling lately, and despite McDavid & Draisaitl cooking with grease, their defense has been markedly improved. Heck, just last night Kulak threw up 3 points and was all over Anaheim's young offense in EDM's 6-1 rout of the Ducks.

With such an improvement on EDM's second pair, they might actually be able to gain traction in the Western Conference playoffs this year. However, I wouldn't hold out much hope with 40-year old Mike Smith & 3.00 career-GAA Mikko Koskinen manning the Oilers' net.
