The 2024 World Cup of Hockey won't be officially announced until a later date, but one key detail has been revealed.

For the 2016 tournament, the NHL introduced Team North America, featuring the best under-23 players from Canada and the United States, as well as Team Europe, which had players from Germany, Slovakia, Norway, Slovenia, among other nations. Both teams were fan favourites, but it felt a bit to gimmicky, and it appears that neither of those teams will return for the 2024 tournament.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun tweeted this morning that NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has announced that Team North America and Team Europe won't return for the 2024 World Cup of Hockey.

"Bill Daly says the next World Cup of Hockey in 2024 won't have a Team North America youngsters team nor a Team Europe. The event will go back to a traditional field. Countries only." Lebrun said.

Now, who will be at the tournament? That's still a bit of a mystery. What we do know is that the tournament will be held in February of 2024, and feature eight teams.

How will those eight teams be determined? Likely through IIHF rankings, although that hasn't been confirmed as of yet. Last week it was reported by TSN's Darren Dreger that a qualifying tournament may be held in August of 2023 for some European nations.

"A play-in event is exactly what's being discussed by the NHL, the NHLPA, the IIHF, and the various Federations. They're meeting this week in Paris and they're trying to hammer out some of the details.

You could see a play-in event for some of the European teams in August 2023. We've talked a lot about what the World Cup will look like in 2024 and again in 2028, it will most likely be eight teams including Canada, the USA, and the six European Federations. Russia, obviously, is to be determined." Dreger said.

The 2024 World Cup of Hockey will be the fourth edition of the best-on-best event, which was first held in 1996, followed by 2004, and 2016.
