Former Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames defenceman Ladislav Smid has announced his retirement from professional hockey at the age of 36.

In an interview with Genus.cz, Smid said that this was the final season of his career and he intends on returning to Canada with his family in the near future.

"This was a dot. And I have to say that even though we didn't win the title, which was my goal at the beginning of the season, the ending was quite sweet. This match was amazing and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I have thought about my decision several times, but I want to follow my first word and not change it. Sometimes I thought I'd add another season, but then I remember my kids in Canada and see video misses as I miss them. They are already seven, they perceive the world a little differently and they need dad side by side.

I mainly want to be with my family and see my friends as much as possible before I fly to Canada. I will stay in the Czech Republic for about a month and then I have plans in Canada. We are building a house there and I have to take it over. Then I would like to get involved in skill-coaching or something similar to make my life a little more varied. But I don't want to run from work to work. I need to enjoy some time off," Smid said.

The Frydlant (Czech Republic) native was drafted all the way back in 2004 with the ninth overall pick by the Anaheim Ducks. He never played a game with Anaheim as they traded him to Edmonton in a massive package that saw Chris Pronger become a Duck.

Smid spent parts of ten seasons in the National Hockey League, before returning to the Czech Republic and playing the last five years with Liberec Bili Tygri HC.

In 583 career games with Edmonton and Calgary, Smid recorded 72 points (12 goals, 60 assists), 472 penalty minutes, and was a -62.
