According to John Rodenburg of TSN1200 radio, the Calgary Flames will be making former sixth overall pick Sean Monahan a healthy scratch on Friday night when they host the Arizona Coyotes.

Monahan, 27, has had a rough last two seasons. After putting up 20+ goals in his first seven years in the NHL, the Brampton (Ontario) native has only recorded 18 goals combined in the last two years (ten in 2020-21, eight in 2021-22).

He's also playing the least amount of hockey, in terms of time-on-ice, in his entire career. During the 2021-22 season, Monahan has averaged 14:09 TOI, with his previous low coming in his rookie season where he averaged 15:59 TOI per night. In Calgary's last game, he only played 9:44 against San Jose.

There were rumours ahead of the trade deadline that the Flames were looking to move Monahan. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Flames tried to acquire defenceman Hampus Lindholm, and part of the return going back to Anaheim would have been Sean Monahan.

"I do think Calgary took a looooooooooong look at Hampus Lindholm, but couldn't do what Boston did. Sean Monahan would have had to be part of it, as the Flames needed to move money to make it work." Friedman said.
