Russia's Ice Hockey Federation has released a statement after word that the International Ice Hockey Federation's Ethics Committee would be reviewing a letter it reportedly sent to KHL teams with instructions on how they could support the war against Ukraine. In its statement, the RIHF denies any such letter was sent.

"The RIHF only contacts KHL clubs with regards to calling players up to national teams. Contact concerning different matters is not made."

"No letters were sent by the RIHF to KHL teams and no contact was made concerning the support of any activities."

Just over 10 days ago, reporter Karl Mansson, who covers the KHL for HockeyNews.se in Sweden, released details of a letter he said had been sent to KHL teams by the RIHF that included instructions on how teams could support the war against Ukraine during playoff games.

"The support of their own during the war is the only possible reaction of a normal person," the letter reportedly said.

It included campaign posters that could be put up in arenas, as well as audio and video that could be used.

The IIHF announced Thursday it was referring the matter to its Ethic Committee for review to see if any rules were broken. Hockey Federations are supposed to stay politically neutral.

Meanwhile, the IIHF will also be reviewing former President and honorary life member Rene Fasel for his apparent involvement in Russia and the KHL including statements about the war in Ukraine. If any violations are determined in either case, the situations will be sent to the IIHF's Disciplinary Board.
