The New Jersey Devils announced on Wednesday morning that they've decided to place defenceman Christian Jaros on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract buyout. The news won't be official until 2 p.m. ET and if he clears on Thursday afternoon, he'll become an unrestricted free agent.

Jaros, 25, was in his first season with the New Jersey Devils after being traded from San Jose last summer, but it's safe to say it's been a rough one for him. In November, he was placed on injured reserve with a hand injury and missed a month of action. One week after he returned from injury, he was placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol, which lasted two weeks. Jaros has also found himself in the press box for several games this season.

In eleven games with the Devils, the Kosice (Slovakia) native didn't have any points, two penalty minutes, and was a minus-four.

Jaros was originally drafted by the Senators in 2015, and he went on to spend parts of six seasons in the National Hockey League with Ottawa, San Jose, and New Jersey.

It's unclear as to what Jaros' plans are if he clears unconditional waivers on Thursday, but there's a very good chance he'll head back to Europe. The last time Jaros played in Europe was during the 2016-17 season in Sweden's top division, the SHL, with Lulea HF.
