Given where the two teams are in the standings, it probably felt like a safe bet. Unfortunately in hockey, any team can beat another on any given night. For one person, that cost them a bundle.

According to BetMGM, a customer wagered $150,000 on the New York Rangers defeating the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night. If the Rangers had won, the pay out would have been $250,000. However, the Devils ended up defeating their rivals 7-4 on a rare off-night for goaltender Igor Shesterkin, who ended up getting pulled after allowing five goals on 24 shots. Backup Alexander Georgiev wouldn't fare any better, allowing another two on seven shots. That's $150,000 down the drain.

The bet caught the attention of New Jersey's social media team.

"To all those who messaged us about that person who bet $150K on the Rangers tonight asking for us to roast them looks like their life choices did that for us already," said the team on Twitter.

"Remember to bet responsibly."
