The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they've placed veteran forward Mathieu Perreault on waivers with the intent to assign him to the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League.

Perreault, 34, signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens in the off-season worth $950,000. The Drummondville (Quebec) native hasn't played a whole lot this season between having a procedure done on his eye, and being a healthy scratch recently.

In 18 games this season, Perreault has recorded five points (three goals, two assists), four penalty minutes, and is plus-one. All three of his goals this season game in one game back in October against the Detroit Red Wings.

There's a good chance that a contending team could put in a waiver claim on Perreault. He can be a depth option for most teams, playing on the fourth line, while also providing leadership down the stretch and into the playoffs.

In other waiver related news, the Edmonton Oilers placed 24-year-old forward Tyler Benson on the wire. In 29 games this season, Benson has two points (one goal, one assist), eighteen penalty minutes, and is a minus-five.
