Some sad news to report from the hockey world on Monday night. The New York Islanders announced that two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jean Potvin passed away at the age of 72.

In a statement, Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello said, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Potvin family. Jean was a leader on the ice, helping the organization win two Stanley Cup Championships. He made his home on the island and was always such a friendly face in the community. We send our sincere condolences to all those who grieve his loss."

Potvin spent parts of eleven seasons in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders (two stints), Cleveland Barons, and the Minnesota North Stars. In 613-career games, he tallied 287 points (63 G, 224 A), and 478 penalty minutes.

The Ottawa (Ontario) native was a member of the Islanders for their 1980 and 1981 Stanley Cup Championships along with his brother, Hockey Hall of Famer, Denis Potvin.

Our thoughts are with the Potvin family at this difficult time.
