The hiring of Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes has ushered in a new era for the Montreal Canadiens. It's still unclear if they'll decide to fully rebuild this team, but there will be a flurry of moves leading up to the trade deadline on March 21st, with pending UFA's expected to be dealt.

One name that has been in the rumour mill over the last month or so is goaltender Carey Price, but don't expect him to be on the move. Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes in an interview with the 98.5 radio station in Quebec, that Price is untouchable.

"Carey Price is untouchable because he is so important to the organization. He's been the most important player for a decade and he has a no-trade clause. So the first question to answer is to know where it is at in terms of health. He has problems with his knee and there are still answers to be found," Hughes said.

When asked about the possibility of buying out the remaining years of Price's contract, Hughes responded with, "I can't answer that right now, but I don't think so."

While Price may be untouchable now, that may not be the case in nine to twelve months from now. A reason why Price may be untouchable is because he essentially has no trade value given that he hasn't played a game since July 2021. You know what you're getting with Carey Price, and contending teams would love to have him between the pipes, but because of his health status currently and his contract, there may not be as many teams lining up to acquire him as there would have been a year ago.

Looking towards the 2022-23 season, once Price gets some games under his belt again and starts performing like we all know he can, then there's a chance Kent Hughes could explore the possibility of moving on from him. Rebuilding Price's trade value will be key, but it all comes down to how he performs on the ice.
