Thankfully, Malkin has recently stated that he doesn't care about money at this point in his career, and seems very willing to take a pay cut to remain a Penguin. The same cannot be said about Letang however, who according to Josh Yohe of The Athletic is looking for a raise on his current $7.25 million salary.
Despite the fact that he will be 35-years-old this April, it is hard to argue Letang's thinking that he is deserving of a raise. The long time veteran is having arguably the best NHL season of his career with 37 points in 38 games, which trails only Jake Guentzel for the team lead. Though it may not be an easy deal for Penguins management to get done, it is likely they will do everything they can to bring him back on a new deal.
The good news is that according to Yohe, the team seems to be willing to give Letang a potential pay raise, as long as the deal is short-term. Many expected this Penguins team to slow down in 2021-22 due to their core players in Malkin, Letang, and Sidney Crosby all aging, but they look as good as ever right now, sitting just one point shy of the New York Rangers for first in the Metro Division.
