The Ontario Hockey League's Board of Governors met on Wednesday morning to discuss the new restrictions in place by the provincial government.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced new restrictions earlier this week that came into effect at 12:01am ET on Wednesday. One of those restrictions was events including sports and concerts are not allowed to sell tickets, meaning that if they decide to continue, it will be without fans in attendance.

The OHL is a gate driven league, meaning that the majority of their revenue comes from ticket sales, concession sales (food/drink), as well as the sales of merchandise. Despite the new restrictions, the league has decided that they will continue on with their 2021-22 season.

In a statement, the league said, "The Ontario Hockey League Board of Governors conducted a meeting this morning to address next steps in light of the recent order issued by the Government of Ontario taking effect today, Wednesday, January 5.

The League has reaffirmed its commitment to continue the 2021-22 OHL season.

The OHL is currently in conversation with government and public health and will have further updates in this area in the very near future."

Currently, the OHL has several games that have been postponed and teams that have paused all activities due to COVID-19 including the Barrie Colts and Peterborough Petes.
