According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Montreal Canadiens have begun the process of finding their new General Manager.

Their first step is seeking permission to speak to candidates under contract with other teams such as Roberto Luongo (Florida), Mathieu Darche (Tampa Bay) and Daniel Brière (Philadelphia).

"Hearing that the Montreal Canadiens have begun reaching out to teams asking permission to speak to GM candidates. Believe they've done so with the likes of Roberto Luongo, Daniel Brière and Mathieu Darche, among others. Obviously a ways to go but the process has started," LeBrun said on Sunday.

The Canadiens have been without a General Manager since late-November when they relieved Marc Bergevin of his duties after nine years at the helm. Since Bergevin was let go, the Canadiens brought in Jeff Gorton as Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and he's in charge of the team day-to-day until a new General Manager is hired.

Montreal's General Manager selection committee of Geoff Molson, Jeff Gorton, Michael Andlauer and Bob Gainey are expected to begin interviewing candidates this week with at least eight identified thus far. Those people are, Patrick Roy, Daniel Brière (Flyers), Mathieu Darche (Lightning), Marc Denis, Kent Hughes, Stéphane Quintal, Danièle Sauvageau and Émilie Castonguay.
