Another night, another controversial goaltender interference call in the NHL. Just over six minutes into the second period of the game between the Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night, Brendan Gallagher scored what appeared to be a good goal as the Bolts' Boris Katchouk pushes him into goaltender Maxime Lagace. The goal was immediately called off. The Canadiens would challenge, but lost and ended up with a delay of game penalty. Even the announcers in the game were sure this would be called a good goal on review as Gallagher had no choice but to make contact with Legace.

Following the disallowed penalty, and the powerplay for Tampa which led to a goal, complaints poured in on social media. Many wondered if Gallagher's reputation around the net was the main cause of the goal being disallowed. The NHL decided to release a statement in an attempt to clarify the call.

"Video review supported the call on the ice that Montreal's Brendan Gallagher interfered with Tampa Bay's Maxime Lagace, preventing him from playing his position in the crease. The decision was made in accordance of Rule 69.7, which states in part, 'In the event that a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net together with the puck by an attacking player after making a stop, the goal will be disallowed'," said the statement.

The Lightning would end up winning the game 5-4 in overtime, making the called off goal and ensuing powerplay marker even tougher to swallow for Habs fans.
