Some very sad news out of Germany Thursday. 18-year-old Niclas Kaus, a player with Löwen Frankfurt in the DEL3 league, has died after fighting for his life in hospital for the past few days.

According to a release from the team, Kaus crashed into the boards during a game last Saturday after a battle for the puck with an opponent from EC Bad Nauheim.

"He fell in such an unfortunate way that he suffered most serious head injuries. He was immediately brought to hospital and operate on," said the release.

The team says over the last few days, doctors exhausted all resources in an attempt to save Kaus's life, but he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

"For the family, after days of hope and fear, this is the worst thing imaginable," said league board member Patrick Steingraf. "The whole family is closely connected with the Löwen Frankfurt, his brother also plays in the U20 and had to witness the tragic accident. What happened makes us all in the Löwen family infinitely sad and stunned. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased and we want to stand by them - as best we can. And we pause, the sports operation rests until further notice, as it should be in this situation."

Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and fans of Niclas Kaus during this extremely difficult time.
