The NHL has been hit hard by COVID-19 since the beginning of the week, and Friday was no different as several players from several teams were placed on the league's protocol list.

Four of those players are members of the Toronto Maple Leafs in Alex Kerfoot, John Tavares, Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds. To help with the absences, they called up Alex Steeves and Carl Dahlstrom from the American Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers were also affected, as both Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Duncan Keith were placed in protocol, resulting in them calling up Cooper Marody and Seth Griffith.

It is beginning to feel more and more likely that the NHL announces they are putting a pause to the 2021-22 season. COVID is currently going through teams faster than anyone would have imagined, and is causing many teams to play shorthanded. It is extremely unfortunate given how well the league seemed to be handling it through the first quarter of the season.
