The New Jersey Devils were the targets of some ridicule earlier this week after unveiling this season's third jersey that Devils great Martin Brodeur had helped design.

The very plain black jersey with the word "Jersey" scripted across the front made the new tarps an easy target for hockey fans from other markets, with a slew of photo edits began to surface with helmets with the word "helmet" and skates with the word "skates" scripted across them in mockery of the jersey design.

Later on during jersey reveal day, the Devils decided to steer into the skid and poke some fun at themselves by displaying a hat, embroidered with the word "hat" across the front, with text that read "Coming soon... maybe."

Well, the idea was actually well-received and, as a result, the Devils decided to produce the hats, which sell for $30, with proceeds going to the Devils Youth Foundation.

The club also came up with a pretty clever slogan to help market the new product.

"It's not a hat trick – it's the real deal."

What a fun way to turn ridicule into something positive and to support a good cause. Kudos to the Devils on handling the situation just about as well as an organization could.
