At 36 years old, Washington Capitals captain is off to an incredible start to his 2021-22 campaign. What we're witnessing is nothing short of remarkable, especially at his age. Ovechkin's chase for Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record continued on Friday afternoon as 'The Great 8' scored a hat trick against the Florida Panthers.

His three goals on Friday marked his 28th career hat trick, tying Bobby Hull and Marcel Dionne for sixth most all time.

Following his hat trick goal, Ovechkin went over to celebrate and fist bump with his son, Sergei.

The Moscow, Russia native is now tied with Connor McDavid with 36 points on the season, four points behind McDavid's teammate, Leon Draisaitl.

With over four and a half years remaining on his contract with the Capitals, and 146 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky's record for most goals in NHL history, it's inevitable that 'The Great 8' will reach that mark. It's become a matter of when, not a matter of if.

Ovechkin and the Capitals currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 13-3-5, which also ties them for first in the NHL on 31 points with Carolina and Florida. With the Capitals playing this well at the quarter-season mark, it's hard not to call them a Stanley Cup contender. Although chasing Gretzky's record is a priority for Ovechkin, a chance at another Stanley Cup is something he wants, and deserves badly.
