Is GM Lou Lamoriello looking to add a young blueliner to the Isles' roster?

The New York Islanders are in dismay amid a 6-game losing streak and a dismal 5-8-2 record through the team's first 15 games to start the 2021-22 season.

It should be mentioned that it's probably too early to press the panic button, with the Isles missing 6 NHL regulars (on the NHL's COVID-19 protocol list), including captain Anders Lee, but the Isles are approaching the quarter-mark of their season and sooner than later, the team has to find a way to start winning games.

On Monday, during an appearance on TJMS, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman pondered whether or not the Isles and GM Lou Lamoriello might be looking for a defenseman with upside, who is under team control for multiple seasons.

"I wonder if he tries to see if he can get a young D with term, now those are hard to get and they cost you, but I was thinking about this the other day, if he's doing anything, I wonder if that's what he's looking at," said Friedman.

One option could be Avs defenseman Sam Girard, who is rumoured to be on the trading block in Colorado after a poor showing during last postseason. Girard is signed through 2026-27 and carries a $5M AAV.

Another intriguing option is one who is quite familiar to Lamoriello (and who would cost a lot less) in Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott. Dermott is signed through 2022-23 at $1.5M per season and has the ability to play either the left side or the right.

Of course, nobody really knows what Lamoriello may be up to, if anything, because the veteran GM does pretty much all of his work in the media's blindspot. Time will tell what the Isles have planned to address their early struggles.
