Following news that the Anaheim Ducks have placed GM and Executive Vice-President Bob Murray on administrative leave pending results of an investigation comes a reported lack of surprise.

"The lack of surprise from sources about Bob Murray being placed on leave and being investigated is ... jarring," said ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

"Not in the sense that they knew this was coming, but more about the individual at the center of it," Wyshynski continued.

Murray had been GM of the Ducks since 2008, when Brian Burke was fired from the position. Before that, he had served as GM of the Chicago Blackhawks in the late 90s, as well as holding various other executive positions. Murray also had a lengthy career as a defenceman in the NHL from 1975 to 1990.

Someone asked Wyshynski how fans are supposed to believe that this investigation was taking place without the knowledge of reporters even though they can sometimes tell a player they've been traded before the player himself knows about it.

"Well, think of it this way: a GM or team might tip a trade. They certainly aren't tipping an internal investigation involving said GM or team," said Wyshynski.

"I can't speak to previous situations, but this one wasn't in the ether," he added.

Anaheim has said very little about the investigation other than that an initial recommendation from a third-party that Murray be placed on administrative leave was followed and that there will be no further comment until the investigation is completed. According to the team's statement, the investigation resulted from "accusations of improper professional conduct against Bob Murray."
