A hockey coach in New York State has found himself in trouble with the law after allegedly striking a 10-year-old player during practice. 53-year-old Marvin Minkler has been charged with attempted second-degree assault, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child after an incident at an arena in Brewster, New York on September 28th.

Minkler was arraigned in court on October 31st and will reappear on November 30th. Through his lawyer, he is denying the accusations.

"We deny all accusations against him," Minkler's lawyer, Sean Broderick, said on Monday, adding that he expects the charges to be dismissed as the case plays out.

According to a police complaint, Minkler allegedly struck the boy "from behind on the upper back, shoulder, head and neck area, with a hockey stick, causing the victim to fall backwards onto the ice. The backwards fall caused the victim's helmeted head to whip back and hit the ice."

A police report states Minkler became angry with the boy for failing to perform a drill properly. It states Minkler "never asked about or checked on the child's wellbeing, but continued to yell and curse at him that he was doing the drill incorrectly."

Minkler is the hockey director at Brewster Ice Arena.
