Some scary moments during a game Thursday between Frolunda and Malmo of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). In the dying seconds of the first period, Frolunda's Max Friberg - a name that is likely familiar to some NHL and AHL fans - went down in the corner after getting tangled up with brothers Markus and Oliver Lauridsen of Malmo. Friberg received a nasty gash to the back of his leg from Markus Lauridsen's skate. The brothers would quickly help Friberg get off the ice, something Frolunda's coach praised them for following the game. The video below doesn't show the exact moment the injury happened, but it does show Friberg being helped off the ice and you can see a trail of blood on the ice behind him.

According to reports out of Sweden, Friberg's gash was deep enough that surgery was required after he was rushed to hospital.

"It was a skate that went into the thigh muscle," said Frolunda's team doctor Kurt Andersson. "There were some blood vessels that broke and some tissue that broke when it was cut off."

"He feels good," continued Andersson. "He underwent surgery for the injury he received and it looked better than expected. He is still in hospital but it looks like he may come home pretty soon."

There's no word at this time as to when Friberg might be able to get back on the ice. Friberg was drafted into the NHL by the Anaheim Ducks in the fifth round in 2011. He would play six games for Anaheim, which is the entirety of his NHL career. He also played a few seasons in the AHL for the Norfolk Admirals, San Diego Gulls, and the St. John's Ice Caps, who were the farm team for the Montreal Canadiens before moving to Laval. Hopefully everything works out ok for him and he can get his professional career back on track eventually.
