Nikita Gusev's professional tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end. The team has announced the Russian, who was a star in the KHL and an Olympic hero in his home country, has been let go and no offer of a regular season contract has been made.

Despite being an offensive star in Russia, Gusev has had a rough go adapting to the NHL. His first season with the New Jersey Devils went well. He managed to get 44 points (13G, 31A) in 66 games. Then his offensive contributions plummeted. He finished last season with the Florida Panthers, although he did not suit up in any playoffs games with the team.

According to reports out of Russia, Gusev is determined not to return home until he's exhausted all of his options in North America. The goal is still to play in the NHL this season.

The Maple Leafs also announced on Tuesday that four other players had been cut from training camp and assigned to the AHL. They are F Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, D Mac Hollowell, G Erik Källgren, and D Kristiāns Rubīns.
