The Edmonton Oilers will be retiring defenceman Kevin Lowe's No. 4 jersey prior to their Nov. 5 game against the New York Rangers, they announced on Monday.

Lowe, 62, played with the Oilers from 1979-1992 and won five Stanley Cups. He was also able to win a sixth Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994, making him one of the most decorated players in hockey history. The number retirement comes just a year after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Despite his great tenure on ice with he Oilers, Lowe has a mixed perception from the Oilers fan base due to his time spent as the team's general manager after his playing career. While he was able to lead them to a Stanley Cup final in 2006, he was also a part of the reason why the team struggled for as long as they did in the early 2010's. Regardless of that however, he had a terrific playing career and deserves to be honored for such. He will join Al Hamilton (3), Paul Coffey (7), Glenn Anderson (9), Mark Messier (11), Jari Kurri (17), Grant Fuhr (31), and Wayne Gretzky (99), as the only other players in franchise history to have their numbers retired.
