The New York Rangers have been without a captain since Ryan McDonagh was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2018. There are a couple of potential candidates to receive the C. One of them would be star player Artemi Panarin. However, in an interview in Russia, Panarin revealed that it's not something he's interested in.

"In fact, there are far more worthy candidates for the position," said Panarin. "Would I want to? Rather not, to be honest. It's not just sticking a letter on [the jersey] and walking around, taking pictures with that jersey on. It's a lot of work in the locker room."

"It's not just playing hockey well. In between periods, spending extra energy to inspire, motivate, 'Come on guys, let's work on this!' Doing a lot of interviews, being the face of the club. A lot of work outside of the hockey arena."

"I'm just afraid I won't be an effective captain. I don't even have English. Who am I gonna motivate? I can only influence by playing. But they'll listen to me without any letters," said Panarin in a live interview on Instagram.

Panarin said the team should have a captain, but did not mention any possible names. He insisted it's not something that's discussed in the locker room. He added he's not sure how the captain of the Rangers would be chosen, but he doesn't believe it would involve a vote from players like some teams do. Panarin said the decision would likely come from management.
