It's not something you see often, but the San Jose Sharks are cutting loose a prospect who had two years left on his three-year entry-level contract. Vladislav Kotkov was signed to an ELC back in 2018. He's been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Kotkov was not drafted. He was instead signed by the Sharks after an invite to a rookie training camp where he impressed management enough to get a deal. The 21-year-old forward put up some very good numbers with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens and Saint John Sea Dogs of the AHL. He's played just one game in the AHL for the San Jose Barracuda, where he put up one goal.

There's no word on exactly why Kotkov and the Sharks are parting ways. It's possible he wants to go home to Russia, although he's never played professional hockey there. San Jose was at the maximum of 50 contracts, so it's possible they wanted the space to sign someone else, or at least have the flexibility to do so later on. Kotkov will become a free agent on Sunday.
