Many professional athletes can be hard on themselves if they feel they aren't performing up to snuff, and it seems New York Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin is no different. In an interview with Sport-express.ru, Shesterkin said he's changing up his training routine over the summer in the hopes of improving when the 2021-22 season opens.

"I was not happy with the last season," said Shesterkin. "I played to the best of my ability, but I could have played better. Therefore, I decided to change the pre-season training a little, to focus on some things, which, if I did before, then not completely."

"Last season I gave up a lot of goals, we lost a lot of games. If you compare with how I started and it ended, then there is a difference. There were incorrect movements."

Shesterkin managed a 16-14-3 record in 2020-21, but his stats were much better than his record shows. He had a save percentage of .916 and a goals against average of 2.62. Room for improvement for sure, but far from awful.

"Perhaps the bad season was related to preparation, perhaps there was some kind of psychological problem," said Shesterkin. "Now is the time to rest, reboot, and to approach the new season with a clear head and free thoughts."

The 25-year-old was drafted in the 4th round in 2014 but decided to spend several years playing in Russia before finally coming to North America during the 2019-20 season.
