The Bruins had one of their most important games of the season this afternoon as they hosted the Ottawa Senators.
The game was especially important as the two teams are currently competing for the same playoff spot.
Coming into today, the Bruins were just one point ahead of the Senators, but Ottawa had two games in hand.
After the shootout loss for the Bruins, the two teams are now tied in points and the Senators still have two games in hand, giving them the better points percentage.
Making matters worse is the fact that there was no reason the Bruins should have lost this game.
In the last minute of play, Jeremy Swayman tried shooting for the empty net, but the Senators were able to keep the puck in the zone.
They maintained possession and then scored with 12 second left in the game, forcing overtime.
The Sens would go on to win in the shootout with rookie netminder Leevi Merilainen stopping all three Bruins attempts.
Now Swayman is facing criticism for the move after the game.
It is one thing to go for a goalie goal with a multiple-goal lead, but to do so in a one-goal contest is quite reckless.
Fans and commentators alike know this, and are now blaming Swayman for the loss despite the fact that he made over 40 saves in the game.
The Bruins cannot afford to drop games like this when they are in such a tight playoff race.
Hopefully Swayman realizes this and will be a bit less selfish going forward.
The team will get another chance to create some separation over Ottawa on Thursday but it will be interesting to see whether or nor Swayman gets the net for that one after this embarrassing gaff.
