Team USA defenseman Charlie McAvoy suffered an injury last night and has now reportedly been admitted to a hospital in Boston for further testing.

USA defenseman Charlie McAvoy was at Mass General Hospital on Monday, as Team USA played Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off at TD Garden, Boston Globe's Jim McBride reports.

Head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged that McAvoy is dealing with an upper-body injury. He, as well as forward Matthew Tkachuk and Auston Matthews, were already scratched as a precaution, thus the U.S. has six defensemen and 11 forwards.

Brady Tkachuk left in the first period with an injury, but Sullivan said it was precautionary.

»We're hopeful we're going to get some of those guys back," Sullivan said.

With the U.S. already assured of Thursday's championship game following victories against Finland and Canada, the game against Sweden meant little.

The Americans lost 2-1, as Gustav Nyquist and Jesper Bratt scored for Sweden, and Samuel Ersson stopped 32 shots. Chris Kreider scored for the U.S., and Jake Oettinger had 21 stops in the loss.

McAvoy has a plus-one rating in two tournament games. The 27-year-old Bruins blue-liner has seven goals and 16 assists in 50 games this season.

A first-rounder in 2016, McAvoy has 300 points (60 goals, 240 assists) and 429 penalty minutes in 504 NHL games. He has 48 points in 91 Stanley Cup playoff games.

The U.S. will now face Canada on Thursday in Boston for the championship game in a winner-take-all event. It is shaping up to be quite the finish to the 4 Nations tournament.
