Gary Bettman appears to have revealed his retirement date as NHL Commissioner, and now a top Insider has revealed his choice to take on the role.

On Thursday, news dropped from The Athletic that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has informed the league of his pending retirement, stating that he has 'a couple of years left' in the role.

Currently, the favourite to replace Bettman will be Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, who likely won't change anything about the way the NHL is run, and that's why NHL Insider Renaud Lavoie has suggested another very intriguing name.

According to Lavoie, the best name for the role would be former Detroit Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman, and while he may not have the traditional background of a Commissioner, his love for hockey and his experience in front office's could make him the perfect candidate.

A respected former player like Yzerman could no doubt spark major change in the NHL, and while Bettman was a great business man, a person like Yzerman would emphasize the greatest points of hockey in the NHL and bring the game back to those hardcore fans of the sport.

At this point in time, it's likely still going to be at lest two years before Bettman moves on from the role, so there's plenty of time for many people to stake their claim for the role, but with love from fans, executives and everyone in the league, Yzerman is an intriguing name.

Over the next two or three years, there's likely to be many names suggested for the new role from Insiders and fans alike, but if the NHL wants to get back to their best and continue growing the game, there won't be many better suggestions that Yzerman.
