The New York Islanders fanbase is a loyal one, but on Monday, star forward Mat Barzal called them out for not turning up to a key game against Columbus.

Over the years, UBS Arena on Long Island has been known as a great building for the New York Islanders to play in, with their fans often packing the stands to throw their support behind their team.

However, on Monday, they were called out by star forward Mat Barzal, who could be seen looking around the arena and saying what looks to be this while sitting on the bench:

«This place is f**king empty bro. This place is empty. F**king joke.»

This season, the New York Islanders sit in 27th place in the league in attendance, with just 91.3% of the building filled up through January 1st of this year, and while it's unclear how many fans were in the building on that night, it must have been bad enough for Barzal to call it out like this.

However, the Islanders simply aren't giving fans enough of a reason to turn up this season, as they lack any type of explosive offensive players on this team, and with Lou Lamoriello seemingly going for the playoffs once more despite not having the talent, it's easy to see why fans wouldn't turn up.

In the game, the Islanders would come away winners 3-1 over the talented Columbus Blue Jackets, and while they sit in last place in the Metropolitan, New York are still in striking distance of the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference.

Ultimately though, until the team can get more talent than Barzal, fans may not want to turn up, and with their GM making questionable decisions, it's unclear if that will ever happen.
