The Canadiens made a special surprise announcement today revealing the first and second quarter-century teams, made up of the best players to play for the team since 2000.
The first team consisted of Carey Price in goal, Andrei Markov and Shea Weber on defense, and Tomas Pelkanec, Saku Koivu, and Alex Kovalev up front.
The second team featured Jose Theodore in goal, Sheldon Souray and PK Subban on defense, and Brendan Gallagher, Nick Suzuki, and Max Pacioretty up front.
Of these choices, one has certainly rubbed habs fans the wrong way.
Many are greatly upset that Shea Weber made the first team over PK Subban. One fan went so far as to call Subban the most iconic Canadien of the century.
Others joined in, lamenting the disrespect the team showed Subban with the fist-team snub.
These fans have a good point. Subban is certainly a more iconic member of the Canadiens than Weber was.
After all, Subban appeared in 434 regular-season games for the Habs, scoring 63 goals and 278 points in the process.
He also won a Norris trophy with the team during the 2012-13 season and made multiple deep playoff runs with the team, including a trip to the conference finals in 2014.
Weber on the other hand played just 275 games for Montreal in his career, scoring 58 goals and 146 points.
He never won any trophies with the team and was a shell of his former self when they made the Stanley Cup final in 2021.
He scored just 6 points in 22 games during that playoff run.
As such, the numbers seem to indicate that Subban deserves to be ahead of Weber in basically every way.
Perhaps if the Canadiens release all-star teams like this in the future, they will reconsider Subban's place in team history.
