After an impressive career that lasted more than a decade, former second-round draft pick Justin Schultz has officially hung up the skates for good.

Way back in the 2008 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers selected University of Wisconsin defenseman Justin Schultz in the second round, and he would go on to have a fantastic career at the NHL level.

Although his run with the Oilers would last just four seasons, Schultz would show immediately that he had the makings of a good defenseman in the NHL, and after that, he would start a very successful phase of his career.

In four seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Schultz would play a key role in the team winning back-to-back Stanley Cups, with the second of those in 2016/17 seeing Schultz post a career high 51 points.

After that, Schultz would play in Washington and Seattle to end his career in the NHL, becoming one of the most consistent and reliable blue liners in the league over that time, with all of his defensive partners improving their game overall alongside the veteran.

Now, after moving to Switzerland due to lack of interest in free agency, Schultz has now decided to hang up the skates, officially announcing his retirement from professional hockey.

Throughout his decade long career, Schultz played in 745 games at the NHL level, posting 71 goals and 324 points over that time, ending his career on a solid note in Seattle with 60 points over two seasons.

At 34-years of age however, it was clear that Schultz wasn't going to get the top-four role he was looking for, and after tallying six assists in eight games in Switzerland to start the year, he has called it quits after an NHL career that many players in the world would be jealous of.
