In today's update from the NHL waivers, we learned that a 500-game veteran goaltender was unexpectedly placed on the wire.

The past few days have been quite eventful on the NHL waivers. After Dante Fabbro was claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Blackhawks forward Andreas Athanasiou and the Colorado Avalanche goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen were surprisingly placed on waivers.

Today, Elliotte Friedman shared an update about the situation, announcing among other things that the veteran goalie James Reimer is back on waivers alongside Riley Stillman.

He also revealed that Athanasiou and Matt Bennin (Toronto Maple Leafs) cleared, but Kahkoken was claimed by the Winnipeg Jets.

Here's what he posted:

James Reimer, 36, took part in only two games this season with the Anaheim Ducks, against the New Jersey Devils and the Vegas Golden Knights. He allowed a total of nine goals in those games, and it looks like he lost Greg Cronin's trust.

Unless another NHL organization decides to take on the goalie and his one-year, $1 million contract, it looks like Reimer will go back to the AHL.

Also, with John Gibson's return from injury, the Ducks' number-one goalie, there's no need to keep both Reimer and Lukas Dostal in the NHL. Gibson showed that he's ready to play at a high level on November 10, in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The goalie stopped 40 of the 42 shots fired at him in his first game of the season.

The Anaheim Ducks are set to face the Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow. Fans hope that Gibson will be able to help his team beat their division rivals, and in the long run, bounce back from the tough season start.
