Funeral services were held for Matthew Gaudreau and Johnny Gaudreau today in Philadelphia, where one reporter made a fool of himself trying to draw attention away from the somber event.

Before the funeral began, several NHL players were seen walking into the building. Some players went in together with teammates or friends from around the league, while others came with their loved ones. Among the players who attended were Patrik Laine, Michael Matheson, and Cole Caufield. As Caufield was walking in, one reporter sheepishly called his name multiple times, trying to get a response from the Canadiens forward, likely so he could ask him a question. The 23-year-old finally turned his head to the man and waived him off subtly, while turning away to continue on towards the building.
Understandably, many people were upset about this. Not because Cole refused to speak to this reporter, but at the reporter for having the audacity to try and get a sound bite from Caufield during such a tragic and somber event. This is clearly a time for grieving, not for interviews.
Meanwhile, Gaudreau's wife, Meredith highlighted the services with a heartfelt tribute to her late husband and his brother. She mentioned several of Gaudreau's friends by name, including Kevin Hayes and Sean Monahan, who chose to come to Columbus this summer in part to play with Johnny hockey again. Perhaps the most bittersweet moment of it all came when she announced that she was expecting her third child with Johnny and now they will never have a chance to meet their father.
Some fans have gone to social media not only to participate in the services when they otherwise would not be able to, but also to spread awareness about driving under the influence as Johnny and Matthew were struck by a driver who was suspected of being intoxicated and had an open container in the vehicle.
Johnny and Matthew were terrific human beings that were taken away from us far too early. Please think twice before driving if you are under the influence of substances. It is not only your own life that you are putting at risk, but also the lives of everyone else on the road. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gaudreau family in this difficult time. Rest in peace Johnny and Matthew.
