A prominent NHL insider has revealed that Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs are closing in on a contract agreement, and he won't be traded.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has promised Nick Robertson he will get an opportunity to contribute this season in 2024-25 after the talented young winger asked for a trade earlier this offseason.
«I know that he had conversations with Craig Berube, the new coach of the Leafs, and Berube assured him that, look, ‘Take a look at our left side, man.' Like there's nothing but opportunity in this lineup with the holes that they have there. And I know that Berube assured Nick Robertson that he'd be given a chance. They like the skillset, as long as the hockey gods smile down on him and he can stay healthy, why wouldn't you want to fight for a spot in the top-six, top-nine?»

The Leafs are thin on options up the left flank, particularly with Max Domi very likely to slide to center next season. That leaves Matthew Knies and Bobby McMann as perhaps the two top competitors for Nick Robertson in terms of top-six minutes, while Easton Cowan, Fraser Minten, Pontus Holmberg, and Connor Dewar vie for the bottom six spots.
Nick Robertson struggled to find the trust of former head coach Sheldon Keefe, and even with Craig Berube now behind the bench, the disgruntled forward reportedly still wanted a fresh start. The trade request was levied to general manager Brad Treliving, who Dreger reports has been working to find a trade partner for the young winger. However, it now appears that they have shifted focus from a trade to guaranteeing Robertson more minutes.
The unsigned Nick Robertson, a restricted free agent, will report to camp with the season looming large, minus a contract. Last season, the 22-year-old scored 14 goals in 56 games.
UPDATE
Nick Robertson has signed a one-year $875,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
