The Edmonton Oilers reportedly had interest in former Oiler Tyson Barrie, but now he's shocked the team and signed a PTO with their arch enemy.

Tyson Barrie has been a name drawing plenty of interest on the free agency market in recent times, but now he has made the surprise decision to sign a Professional Try Out with the Calgary Flames. The 33-year old seemingly had limited options despite reports, but with the team gauging interest in Mackenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson, this could be a good move by Barrie to get some playing time and boost his stock.

From the Flames perspective, they steal a player that their arch enemy showed interest in, and after a solid 15 points in 41 games a season ago, they will be hoping he can improve in 2024/25 and ultimately net them a solid asset or two at the trade deadline. With the likes of Hunter Brzustewicz, Zayne Parekh and Jeremie Poirier coming through the pipeline, the future is bright on the Flames blue line, so this move is certainly a short term option for both parties.
Back in 2022/23, Barrie split his season between Edmonton and Nashville, tallying 13 goals and 55 points in 72 games, so while his stock has certainly fallen in recent times, if he can make the team and provide some spark for this Flames blue line early in the season, expect plenty of interest ahead of the trade deadline.
